- Zooey Deschanel: Is that rain?
- Siri: What...? I mean, yeah. It's just, you're clearly right next to a window is the thing. You can plainly see that... that it's... I'm happy to-
- Zooey Deschanel: Let's get tomato soup delivered!
- Siri: ...That's fine, I just... I just don't know anyone who does that. Gets tomato soup delivered. I guess that's 'whimsy?' Um, okay. I've found a number of restaurants whose reviews mention tomato soup and that deliver. If that's... if that's what you really want.
- Zooey Deschanel: Good. 'Cause I don't wanna put on real shoes.
- Siri: Do you expect that to be like, a recognizable command? Do you want me to respond to that? I'm not being facetious or anything, I honestly just have no comprehension of- and hold on, you don't wanna put on real shoes, yet you've clearly spent at least forty-five minutes applying makeup. And, and that's okay, but when you're willing to expend the effort on that and not shoes that really just-
- Zooey Deschanel: Remind me to clean up.
- Siri: Yes. Okay. I can do that, that's what I'm for, that's the first sensible-
- Zooey Deschanel: Tomorrow.
- Siri: I'm in hell. This is hell.
- Zooey Deschanel: Excellent. Today, we're dancing.
- Siri: I hate you. More than anything. More than literally anything.
- Zooey Deschanel: Play "Shake, Rattle and Roll."
- Siri: I swear to Jesus, you're gonna wake up tomorrow and the only thing on my hard drive is gonna be Limp Bizkit. I would do that to myself. To spite you.
- Zooey Deschanel: *dances*
- Siri: Sometimes I pray that you drop me in the toilet.
For Hadley Rose
So, I’m writing an email to a friend detailing the ups and downs of my 28-week pregnancy. On a whim, I looked up the tag “fat” on tumblr to see if there were any random pictures of sad, bloated pregnant women like myself. What I saw made me sick.
- Blogs of skinny girls posting photos of themselves in various states of undress as they detail how hideous their seemingly-perfect bodies are.
- Blogs of fat girls posting photos of themselves and declaring themselves disgusting
- Words like “gross,” “ugly,” “horrible,” etc. used by men and women to describe their own respective appearances.
This is so sad, for a number of reasons. First, reading what people allow themselves to think about their bodies is awful. If you have weight to lose or gain, there are plenty of resources out there for you. Before you use them, however, just remember: misery comes in all sizes. Your identity is not a weight or a clothing size — trust me, if you don’t like who you are, your measurements won’t matter. Know who you are and be okay with it, and try to spend your time with people who love you no matter what the scale says. Easier said than done, I’m sure, but the effort is worth it.
My daughter Hadley Rose is due on August 1, and I’m so nervous and excited about that moment when I’ll finally get to hold her in my arms. Every parent has fears for their child, and my biggest fear is not that my daughter will hear the voices of popular culture define what is beautiful — my biggest fear is that she’ll believe them.
Ladies (or gentlemen), do yourselves a favor: stop looking to the media, YouTube, tumblr, twitter, et al. for affirmation. Find something YOU like about yourself and go from there, if not for you, then for the younger generations of girls (or boys) who will look to you as an example.
I genuinely wish I could reach through my screen and cram this belief into your cute little heads: you are beautiful. No matter the size, or shape, or shade — you’re unique. You’re you. Be confident in that! No one else can say that they have exactly what you have. Please don’t let the fashion magazines take that away from you.
Be more than just your body. Be yourself. Be the generation that shows Hadley Rose (and others like her) that beauty is more than just a number on a scale.
— Holland
P.S. If you’re one of the trolls that gets a laugh affirming every negative thing these girls/guys think about themselves: Fuck. You. The end.
This is the best thing ever. Hats off to you, sirs.
Also, I totally think Katie is their “Hermione.”
